and his deeds; and it entails raising oneself above people and overbearing them, so that it becomes a cause of people's estrangement from him, and entails abandoning the correction of his faults and the making good of what he has missed. So the sources of God's mercy, His kindness and His guidance are cut off from him, and he is left apart from his Lord and from creation — so there is no desolation more desolate than it. And his words, peace be upon him, "and no scrupulousness", are by comparison with the scrupulousness of one who abstains from things disapproved but does not abstain from things forbidden. Al-shukhus is going from town to town and travelling in the land; and it is possible that what is meant here includes going out from the house. Al-khutwa, with damma and with kasra, is standing, nearness and rank — that is, he sets out to acquire what brings about standing and rank in the hereafter.

«14»- ma, the Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: al-Mufid, from Ibn Quluwayh, from al-Kulayni, from 'Ali b. Ibrahim, from al-Yaqtini, from Hannan b. Sadir, from his father, from al-Baqir, peace be upon him, in the report of Salman and 'Umar, that he said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Company of Quraysh, a man's standing is his religion, his manliness his character, and his root his intellect.

«15»- ma, the Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: al-Mufid, from Isma'il b. Muhammad al-Katib, from 'Abd al-Samad b. 'Ali, from Muhammad b. Harun b. 'Isa, from Abu Talha al-Khuza'i, from 'Umar b. 'Abbad, from Abu Furat, who said: I read in a book of Wahb b. Munabbih, and there was written at the head of the book: This is what the sages have set down in their books. Striving in the worship of God is the most profitable trade; and there is no wealth more beneficial than intellect; and no poverty more severe than ignorance; and a discipline you acquire is better than an inheritance; and goodness of character is the best companion; and success is the best leader; and there is no support more reliable than consultation; and no desolation more desolate than self-admiration. And let not the man of pride covet fair praise of himself.

بيان: العائدة المنفعة و يقال هذا أعود أي أنفع و لا ظهر أي لا معين و لا مقوي فإن قوة الإنسان بقوة ظهره.

Elucidation: al-'a'ida is benefit; and it is said "this is a'wad", that is, more beneficial. And "no support" means no helper and no strengthener — for a man's strength is by the strength of his back.

«16»- 'a, 'Ilal al-Shara'i': Ibn al-Mutawakkil, from al-Sa'dabadi, from al-Barqi, from his father, from Ibn Abi 'Umayr, from one he named, from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, who said: God, Almighty and Glorious, has created nothing more hateful to Him than the fool; for He has stripped him of the most beloved of things to Him, and that is his intellect.

بيان: بغضه تعالى عبارة عن علمه بدناءة رتبته و عدم قابليته للكمال و ما يترتب عليه عن عدم توفيقه على ما يقتضي رفعة شأنه لعدم قابليته لذلك فلا ينافي

Elucidation: His hatred, exalted be He, is an expression of His knowledge of the baseness of his rank and his lack of capacity for perfection and for what follows upon it; or of His not granting him success in what would require the elevation of his standing, on account of his lack of capacity for that. So it is not incompatible with
