«13»- ma, the Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: al-Mufid, from al-Husayn b. Muhammad al-Tammar, from Muhammad b. Qasim al-Anbari, from Ahmad b. 'Ubayd, from 'Abd al-Rahim b. Qays al-Hilali, from al-'Umari, from Abu Hamza al-Sa'di, from his father, who said: The Commander of the Faithful 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon them both, made his testament to al-Hasan b. 'Ali, peace be upon them both, and said among what he enjoined upon him: My son, there is no poverty more severe than ignorance, and no privation more severe than the privation of intellect; and no solitude and no desolation more desolate than self-admiration; and no standing like goodness of character; and no scrupulousness like restraint from what God has forbidden; and no worship like reflection upon the making of God, Almighty and Glorious. My son, the intellect is a man's close friend, forbearance his vizier, gentleness his father, and patience among the best of his troops. My son, the man of intellect must needs look into his own affair; so let him guard his tongue and know the people of his age. My son, among trials is destitution, and more severe than that is sickness of the body, and more severe than that is sickness of the heart. And among blessings is amplitude of wealth, and better than that is soundness of the body, and better than that is the God-fearing of hearts. My son, the believer has three hours: an hour in which he converses secretly with his Lord; an hour in which he calls himself to account; and an hour in which he is alone with himself and its pleasure in what is lawful and praiseworthy. And the believer must needs set out for three things: the mending of a livelihood (1), or a step towards the hereafter, or a pleasure in what is not forbidden.

Elucidation: al-'udm, with damma, is poverty and the loss of a thing. And al-'ujb is a man's being pleased with himself for his virtues
