Then he, God's blessings be upon him, departed; and I awoke in alarm, and turned to supplication and weeping and the pouring out of grief and complaint, until the break of dawn. And when morning came I began the composition of this book, in compliance with the command of the friend of God and His proof, seeking help from God and relying upon Him and asking forgiveness for shortcoming. And my success is only through God; upon Him I rely and to Him I turn.
And Ahmad b. 'Ali al-Tabrisi said in al-Ihtijaj: In most of the reports we set down we do not give the chain — either because there is consensus upon it, or because it accords with what the intellects have indicated, or because of its fame in the biographies and the books among those who differ and those who agree — except what I have set down from Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. 'Ali al-'Askari, peace be upon them both; for that is not as widely known as the rest, even though it comprises the like of what we have mentioned. For that reason I have given its chain at the first report of it and not elsewhere, since all that I have related from him, peace be upon him, I have related by a single chain, from among the reports which he, peace be upon him, mentioned in his commentary.
Then he said: There related it to me the Sayyid, the learned, the devout, the just, Abu Ja'far Mahdi b. al-'Abid Abu al-Harb al-Husayni al-Mar'ashi, may God be pleased with him. He said: There related to me the Shaykh al-Saduq Abu 'Abd Allah Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Duristi, may God have mercy on him. He said: There related to me my father Muhammad b. Ahmad. He said: There related to me the Shaykh, the felicitous, Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Husayn b. Babawayh al-Qummi. He said: There related to me Abu al-Hasan Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Astarabadi the commentator. He said: There related to me Abu Ya'qub Yusuf b. Muhammad b. Ziyad and Abu al-Hasan 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Sayyar — and the two of them were of the Imami Shi'a — from their fathers, who said: There related to us Abu Muhammad al-Hasan b. 'Ali al-'Askari.
And the Shaykh Ibn Quluwayh, may God have mercy on him, said at the opening of the Kitab Kamil al-Ziyara: And I have gathered it from the Imams, God's blessings be upon them, and have not set down in it a tradition related from other than them, since in what we have related from them of their traditions, God's blessings be upon them, there is sufficiency in place of the traditions of others. And we know that we do not encompass all that has been related from them on this subject, nor on any other; but what has come to us by way of the trustworthy among our companions, may God have mercy on them, I have set down. Nor have I set down in it a tradition related from the isolated among the men, transmitting that (1) from them, who are not known for narration nor renowned for hadith and learning.
