the Book of al-Masa'il of 'Ali b. Ja'far, and the Fihrist of al-Shaykh Muntajab al-Din. We assigned them no siglum either because they are set down in full in their places, as you have learned; or because our recourse to them is slight, most of their reports being from the wider community; or because the book is of small bulk and its reports few; or because of the absence of complete reliance upon it; or for other such considerations and purposes.
Then know that we have left aside setting down the reports of certain widely transmitted books in this book of ours — such as the four books — because they are widely transmitted and carefully preserved, so that perhaps it is not permissible to expend effort in copying them and leaving them aside. Yet if in some places we need to set down a report from them, these are their sigla: ka for al-Kafi; yb for al-Tahdhib; sa for al-Istibsar; yh for Man la Yahduruhu al-Faqih. When we come to the derivative rulings we shall leave the sigla aside and give the names explicitly, if God the Exalted wills, for benefits particular to that which are not hidden from men of understanding. And there too we shall leave aside the abbreviations in the chains which we have adopted in the following section, given how much the chain is needed there.
Chapter Four: Conventions adopted for abbreviating the chains of transmission
— while guarding against the omission that leads to slight reliance. For most compilers have made a habit of lengthening their mention of the men of a report, so as to adorn the book and multiply the chapters; while some of them drop the chains altogether, so that the reports thereby fall from the rank of those with full chains, and the distinction between reports in strength and weakness, completeness and deficiency, is lost — for it is by the reporter that the standing of the report is known, and it is by reliance upon the transmitters that the loftiness of a narration and a tradition is inferred. So we chose to set down the chain in its entirety while observing the utmost concision: contenting ourselves, in the case of well-known men, with mentioning their father, or their title, or their bare name, without ascription to grandfather or father and without mention of the descriptive epithet, the agnomen and the title; and, where a chain recurs often across the chapters, referring to the whole of it by a siglum, a mark and a convention laid down at the head of the book — so that nothing of the benefits of the primary works should be left out of our book and it thereby fall from the rank of complete acceptability.
