و كتاب الكر و الفر مشهور و مشتمل على أجوبة شريفة.

The Book of al-Karr wa'l-Farr is well known and contains noble answers.

و كتاب الأربعين من الكتب المعروفة و الشيخ إبراهيم القطيفي رحمه اللّٰه كان في غاية الفضل و كان معاصرا للشيخ نور الدين المروج و كانت بينهما مناظرات و مباحثات كثيرة.

The Book of al-Arba'in is among the recognised books. Al-Shaykh Ibrahim al-Qatifi, God have mercy on him, was of the utmost learning; he was a contemporary of al-Shaykh Nur al-Din the promoter, and between them were many disputations and debates.

ثم اعلم أنا سنذكر بعض أخبار الكتب المتقدمة التي لم نأخذ منها كثيرا لبعض الجهات مع ما سيتجدد من الكتب في كتاب مفرد سميناه بمستدرك البحار إن شاء اللّٰه الكريم الغفار إذ الإلحاق في هذا الكتاب يصير سببا لتغيير كثير من النسخ المتفرقة في البلاد و اللّٰه الموفق للخير و الرشد و السداد.

Then know that we shall set down some of the reports of the foregoing books from which we have not taken much, for certain reasons, together with such books as newly appear, in a separate book which we have named Mustadrak al-Bihar, if God the Generous and Forgiving wills — since appending them to this book would occasion the alteration of many copies already dispersed through the lands. God is the granter of success in what is good, right and sound.

الفصل الثالث في بيان الرموز التي وضعناها للكتب المذكورة

Chapter Three: The sigla assigned to those books

و نوردها في صدر كل خبر ليعلم أنه مأخوذ من أي أصل و هل هو في أصل واحد أو متكرر في الأصول و لو كان في السند اختلاف نذكر الخبر من أحد الكتابين و نشير إلى الكتاب الآخر بعده و نسوقه إلى محل الوفاق و لو كان في المتن اختلاف مغير للمعنى نبينه و مع اتحاد المضمون و اختلاف الألفاظ و مناسبة الخبر لبابين نورد بأحد اللفظين في أحد البابين و باللفظ الآخر في الباب الآخر.

We set them at the head of every report so that it may be known from which primary work it is taken, and whether it is in a single work or repeated across the works. Where there is a difference in the chain, we set the report down from one of the two books and refer to the other after it, carrying it through to the point of agreement. Where there is a difference in the text that alters the meaning, we make it clear. Where the content is the same but the wording differs and the report suits two chapters, we set it down with one wording in the one chapter and with the other wording in the other.

Let us then set down the sigla: n for 'Uyun Akhbar al-Rida, peace be upon him; ' for 'Ilal al-Shara'i'; k for Ikmal al-Din; yd for al-Tawhid; l for al-Khisal; li for the Amali of al-Saduq; thw for Thawab al-A'mal; m' for Ma'ani al-Akhbar; hd for al-Hidaya; 'd for al-'Aqa'id. As for the rest of al-Saduq's books and the two books of his father, we had no need of sigla for them, their reports being few. b for Qurb al-Isnad; yr for Basa'ir al-Darajat; ma for the Amali of al-Shaykh; ght for the Ghayba of al-Shaykh; msba for the two Misbahs; sha for al-Irshad; ja for the Majalis of al-Mufid; khts for the Book of al-Ikhtisas.
