…brethren who travelled through the lands to obtain them and sought them in every region and quarter with earnest searching, until — by the grace of my Lord — there gathered with me a great number of the reliable primary works upon which the scholars of past ages relied and to which the eminent of bygone centuries had recourse. I found them to contain abundant benefits absent from the famous books in circulation, and I came upon in them the bases of many rulings which most scholars had confessed could be found nowhere fit to serve as their source. So I spent the utmost of my effort in bringing them into currency, correcting them, ordering them and refining them.

And when I saw the age at the height of its corruption, and found most of its people turning aside (1) from what leads to right guidance, I feared that before long these works would revert to the neglect and abandonment they had known, and I was afraid that dispersal would find its way to them, since treacherous time gives no help. Beyond this, the reports bearing on any one purpose were scattered across the chapters and dispersed through the sections, so that it was rarely possible for anyone to light upon all the reports relating to a single purpose. Perhaps this too was among the causes of their being abandoned, and of people's slight desire to preserve them.

So, after seeking what was best from my Lord, seeking aid in His might and power, and seeking support from His confirmation and mercy, I resolved to compile them, to arrange and order them, and to gather them into a single book with well-ordered (2) sections and chapters and with its purposes and topics carefully set down, upon a remarkable plan and a wonderful arrangement, the like of which is not known in the compositions and compilations of our people. And it came out, praise be to God, as I had intended, in the best fulfilment; and by the grace of my Lord there came to me more than I had prepared for and aimed at, beyond my best hope. I prefaced every chapter with the verses relating to its subject, then set down after them something of what certain of the exegetes have said concerning them, where they stood in need of exegesis and clarification. Then every chapter of it has taken in either the whole of the report relating to its subject, or that part of it which bears upon it — with the whole set down in another place more fitting to it, or with a reference to the place where it is mentioned, that being more suited to it — so as to secure the intended benefit together with complete concision. And I made clear, with a sufficient explanation and in the utmost brevity, whatever among the reports stood in need of elucidation,

(١)حاد عن الشي ء: مال عنه و عدل.hada 'an al-shay': he inclined away from it and turned aside.
(٢)اتسق الامر: انتظم.ittasaqa al-amr: the matter was well ordered.
