So I found all knowledge in the Book of God, the Mighty, "which falsehood does not approach from before it or from behind it", and in the reports of the household of the prophetic mission, whom God made the treasurers of His knowledge and the interpreters of His revelation. And I knew that as for the knowledge of the Qur'an, the understandings of God's servants do not suffice to derive it with certainty, and none encompasses it save those whom God has chosen for that from among the Imams of religion, in whose house the Trustworthy Spirit descended. So I left aside that in which I had wasted a period of my life, though it was what had currency in our age, and turned to what I knew would profit me in my hereafter, though it found no market in our time. I chose to search out the reports of the pure and righteous Imams, peace of God be upon them; I set about investigating them, gave reflection upon them its due, and gave training in them its full share.
By my life, I found them a ship of salvation laden with the treasures of felicity, and found them (1) a firmament adorned with luminaries that deliver one from the darknesses of ignorance. I saw their ways plain and their roads clear, the banners of guidance and success raised along their paths, and the voices of those calling to triumph and prosperity audible upon their courses. Travelling their thoroughfares I came to verdant gardens and green groves adorned with the blossoms of every science and the fruits of every wisdom; and among their stages I beheld trodden and well-kept roads leading to every honour and rank. I did not light upon any wisdom but that its purest was there, nor attain any truth but that its root was there.
Then, after covering the well-known books in circulation, I pursued the reliable but neglected primary works — abandoned through long ages and extended times, whether because of the dominance of the rulers of the opponents and the leaders of misguidance, or because of the currency of false sciences among the ignorant who lay claim to merit and perfection, or because a number of later scholars paid them little attention, content with those that had become famous as being more comprehensive, more sufficient, more complete and more satisfying than any single one of them.
So I set about asking after them in the east of the lands and in their west for a time, pressing my request upon everyone I supposed had anything of the sort, even if he was grudging of it (2). In this I was helped by a number of
