و ابن شاذان قد عرفت حاله.

و المسعودي عده النجاشي في فهرسته من رواة الشيعة و قال له كتب منها كتاب إثبات الوصية لعلي بن أبي طالب عليهما السلام و كتاب مروج الذهب مات سنة ثلاث و ثلاثين و ثلاثمائة.

As for al-Mas'udi, al-Najashi counted him in his Fihrist among the transmitters of the Shi'a and said: "He has books, among them the Book of Ithbat al-Wasiyya li-'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon them both, and the Book of Muruj al-Dhahab. He died in the year three hundred and thirty-three."

و أما كتاب النوادر فمؤلفه من الأفاضل الكرام قال الشيخ منتجب الدين في الفهرست علامة زمانه جمع مع علو النسب كمال الفضل و الحسب و كان أستاد أئمة عصره و له تصانيف شاهدته و قرأت بعضها عليه انتهى و أكثر أحاديث هذا الكتاب مأخوذ من كتب موسى بن إسماعيل بن موسى بن جعفر عليهما السلام الذي رواه سهل بن أحمد الديباجي عن محمد بن محمد بن الأشعث عنه فأما سهل فمدحه النجاشي و قال ابن الغضائري بعد ذمه لا بأس بما روى من الأشعثيات و ما يجري مجريها مما رواه غيره و ابن الأشعث وثقه النجاشي و قال يروي نسخة عن موسى بن إسماعيل و روى الصدوق في المجالس من كتابه بسند آخر هكذا حدثنا الحسن بن أحمد بن إدريس عن أبيه عن أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى عن محمد بن يحيى الخزاز عن موسى بن إسماعيل فبتلك القرائن يقوي العمل بأحاديثه و أما أدعية السر فسنوردها بتمامها في محله.

As for the Book of al-Nawadir, its author is among the noble and eminent. Al-Shaykh Muntajab al-Din said in the Fihrist: "The scholar of his age; he combined with loftiness of lineage the perfection of learning and standing, and was the teacher of the leading men of his time. He has compositions; I met him and read some of them before him." End of quotation. Most of the traditions of this book are taken from the books of Musa b. Isma'il b. Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon them both, which Sahl b. Ahmad al-Dibaji transmitted from Muhammad b. Muhammad b. al-Ash'ath, from him. As for Sahl, al-Najashi praised him; and Ibn al-Ghada'iri, after censuring him, said: "There is no harm in what is transmitted of the Ash'athiyyat and the like of them, of what others have transmitted." As for Ibn al-Ash'ath, al-Najashi attested his trustworthiness and said that he transmits a recension from Musa b. Isma'il. Al-Saduq transmitted from his book in al-Majalis by another chain, thus: "There narrated to us al-Hasan b. Ahmad b. Idris, from his father, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. 'Isa, from Muhammad b. Yahya al-Khazzaz, from Musa b. Isma'il." By these indications, acting upon its traditions is strengthened. As for Ad'iyat al-Sirr, we shall set them down in full in their place.

و كتاب الفضائل و كتاب إزاحة العلة مؤلفهما من أجلة الثقات الأفاضل و قد مدحه أصحاب الإجازات كثيرا و قال الشهيد قدس سره في الذكرى ذكر الشيخ أبو الفضل الشاذان بن جبرئيل القمي و هو من أجلاء فقهائنا في كتاب إزاحة العلة في معرفة القبلة ثم ذكر شطرا منه. و أما كتاب الصفين فهو كتاب معتبر أخرج منه الكليني و سائر المحدثين و قال النجاشي نصر بن مزاحم المنقري العطار أبو المفضل كوفي مستقيم الطريقة صالح الأمر غير أنه يروي عن الضعفاء كتبه حسان منها كتاب الجمل و كتاب الصفين و ذكر أسانيده إلى الكتابين و سائر كتبه و ذكر الشيخ أيضا في الفهرست سنده إلى كتبه.

As for the Book of al-Fada'il and the Book of Izahat al-'Illa, their author is among the most eminent of the trustworthy and learned, and the holders of authorisations have praised him greatly. Al-Shahid, God sanctify his secret, said in al-Dhikra: "The Shaykh Abu al-Fadl Shadhan b. Jibra'il al-Qummi — who is among our eminent jurists — mentioned in the Book of Izahat al-'Illa fi Ma'rifat al-Qibla…", and then he set down a portion of it. As for the Book of Siffin, it is a reliable book from which al-Kulayni and the other traditionists drew. Al-Najashi said: "Nasr b. Muzahim al-Minqari al-'Attar, Abu al-Mufaddal, a Kufan of upright method and sound conduct, save that he transmits from the weak. His books are excellent, among them the Book of al-Jamal and the Book of Siffin." And he set down his chains to the two books and to the rest of his books; al-Shaykh likewise set down in the Fihrist his chain to his books.
