from which I transmitted it contained plain solecisms and disordered wording, so I have reproduced it as I found it, for fear of altering and changing it. Let whoever looks into it find an excuse for me, for I have set out my excuse in the matter."
The Book of Basa'ir al-Darajat is among the reliable primary works from which al-Kulayni and others transmitted.
The books of al-Shaykh are likewise among the well-known books, except the Book of al-Amali, which is not as widely known as the rest of his books; yet we found old copies of it bearing the authorisations of eminent scholars, and we found what the traditionists and scholars after him transmitted from it to agree with what is in it.
The Amali of his learned son is, in our time, better known than his own Amali, and most people suppose it to be al-Shaykh's Amali — which is not so, as has become clear to me from evident indications. Yet his son's Amali falls no way short of his own in reliability and renown, even if al-Shaykh's Amali is, in my view, sounder and more trustworthy.
The Book of al-Irshad is better known than its author, God have mercy on him. Of the Book of al-Majalis we found old copies, and the indications point to its soundness (1). As for the Book of al-Ikhtisas, it is an elegant book containing the circumstances of the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and his family, and of the Imams, peace be upon them, and in it are rare reports. I transmitted it from an old copy, upon whose title was written: "A book extracted from the Book of al-Ikhtisas, the composition of Abu 'Ali Ahmad b. al-Husayn b. Ahmad b. 'Imran, God have mercy on him." Yet after the preface it ran thus: "Muhammad b. Muhammad b. al-Nu'man said: There narrated to me Abu Ghalib Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Zurari and Ja'far b. Muhammad b. Qulawayh…" to the end of the chain; and so to the end of the book it begins from the shaykhs of al-Shaykh al-Mufid. So it appears that it is among the compositions of al-Mufid, God have mercy on him. The rest of his books are too well known to need comment.
The Book of Kamil al-Ziyara is among the recognised primary works; al-Shaykh drew upon it in al-Tahdhib, as did other traditionists.
The Book of al-Mahasin of al-Barqi is among the reliable primary works; al-Kulayni transmitted from it, as did every compiler after him.
The commentary of 'Ali b. Ibrahim is among the recognised books; al-Tabrisi and others transmitted from it.
