Chapter Two: The reliability of those books, and the differences among them

Know that most of the books on which we have relied in transmission are well known and of established attribution to their authors — such as the books of al-Saduq, God have mercy on him, for apart from al-Hidaya, Sifat al-Shi'a, Fada'il al-Shi'a, Musadaqat al-Ikhwan and Fada'il al-Ashhur, they fall no way short in fame of the four books upon which everything turns in these times. They are included in our authorisations, and those eminent and excellent scholars who came after al-Saduq transmitted from them. The Book of al-Hidaya is also well known, though not to that degree (1). God has made available to us old and corrected copies of these: as for the Book of al-Amali, we found of it a corrected and vowelled copy written close to the age of the author, which had been read before many of the shaykhs and bore their authorisations. So too the Book of al-Khisal, which we collated against two old copies, one of which bore the authorisation of al-Shaykh Miqdad. So too the Book of Ikmal al-Din, which we had copied from an old book whose date of writing was close to the time of composition. And so too the Book of 'Uyun Akhbar al-Rida, peace be upon him, for we corrected its first part from a corrected copy said to be in the hand of its compiler, God have mercy on him — though in my view it was not in his hand, but bore his writing and his correction.

As for the Book of al-Imama, its author is among the greatest of the traditionists and jurists, and our scholars count his legal opinions among the reports themselves. An old, corrected copy of it reached us. The other primary work contains noble and solid reports with reliable chains, and the eminence of its author is apparent from it. The Book of Qurb al-Isnad is among the reliable and well-known primary works; we copied it from an old copy taken from the hand of al-Shaykh Muhammad b. Idris, upon which was the following in his own hand: "The original

In one copy: "And as for the Book of Da'a'im al-Islam which we have, I consider it possible that it is the composition of some other of the leading scholars." (It has already been stated that it is by the judge al-Nu'man b. Muhammad.)
