your sitting-companions when you speak to them. And know that your heart is a vessel, so look to what you stuff your vessel with. And know the world and cast it behind you, for it is no abode for you, nor is there in it a place of settling for you; it was made only a passing provision for the servants, that they might take provision from it for the return. O Moses, set your soul (1) upon patience, and you will meet forbearance; and clothe your heart with God-fearing, and you will attain knowledge; and train your soul upon patience, and you will be delivered from sin. O Moses, free yourself for knowledge if you desire it, for knowledge is only for one who frees himself for it. And do not be one of much speech (2), a prattler (3); for the abundance of speech disfigures the scholars and discloses the faults of the frivolous. But keep to moderation, for that is of success and of rightness. And turn away from the ignorant, and be forbearing toward the foolish, for that is the excellence of the forbearing and the adornment of the scholars. And when the ignorant man reviles you, be silent toward him in peace and shun him in resolve; for what remains of his ignorance toward you and of his reviling of you is more. O son of 'Imran, do not open a door of which you do not know the shutting, and do not shut a door of which you do not know the opening. O son of 'Imran, one whose greed for the world does not come to an end and whose desire in it does not cease — how shall he be a worshipper? And one who belittles his own state and charges God concerning what He has decreed for him — how shall he be a renouncer? O Moses, learn what you learn in order to act by it, and do not learn in order to talk of it, lest its ruin be upon you and its light be upon another.

Elucidation: he said in al-Fa'iq: al-bur, with damma, is the plural of bawar (4); and with fatha it is the verbal noun; and the verbal noun may also be with damma.

Hilal, from Ibn Abi 'Umayr, from 'Abd al-Mu'min al-Ansari, who said: I said to Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him: A people relate that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: The difference of my community is a mercy. And he said: They have spoken truly. And I said: If their difference is a mercy, then their coming together is a punishment? He said: It is not as you go, nor as they went. He meant only the words of God, mighty and majestic: "So why should there not go forth from every party of them a group, that they may gain understanding in religion and that they may warn their people
