Durust, from 'Abd al-Hamid b. Abi al-'Ala', from Musa b. Ja'far, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Whoever plunges himself wholly into the seeking of grammar is stripped of humility.

Elucidation: the apparent view is that what is meant is the science of grammar; and the later origination of this science and of the name does not conflict with that, because of his knowledge, peace be upon him, of what would later arise. And it is possible that what is meant is the turning of attention to the rules of grammar in the state of supplication. And al-nahw in the language is the road, and the direction, and the intent; and none of these suits the context save with complete artificiality (1).

«38»- shy, the Tafsir of al-'Ayyashi: from Yunus b. 'Abd al-Rahman, that Dawud said: We were with him, and the sky thundered, and he said: Glory be to Him whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels out of fear of Him. And Abu Basir said to him: May I be made your ransom — has the thunder a speech? And he said: O Abu Muhammad, ask about what concerns you and leave what does not concern you.

«39»- The Nawadir of al-Rawandi, by his chain, from Musa b. Ja'far, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Indeed of clear speech there is sorcery, and of knowledge there is ignorance, and of poetry there is wisdom, and of speech there is justice.

«40»- al-Durra al-Bahira, from al-Kazim, peace be upon him, who said: Whoever burdens himself with what is not of his knowledge wastes his deed and is disappointed in his hope.

«41»- And al-Jawad, peace be upon him, said: Gaining understanding is a price for everything precious and a ladder to everything lofty.

«42»- al-Jawahir of al-Karajuki: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: The sciences are four: jurisprudence for the religions, and medicine for the bodies, and grammar for the tongue, and the stars for the knowing of the times.

«43»- The Da'awat of al-Rawandi: al-Hasan b. 'Ali, peace be upon them both, said: A wonder at one who reflects upon what he eats — how does he not reflect upon what he takes into his mind, so as to keep from his belly what harms it and to deposit in his breast what destroys him?

«44»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: Knowledge is two knowledges: an innate one and a heard one; and the heard does not profit when the innate is not there.

«45»- And he said, peace be upon him — and he had been asked about the determining: a dark road, so do not travel it; and a deep sea, so do not enter it; and the secret of God, so do not burden yourselves with it.

ط.The apparent view is that what is meant by al-nahw is the road, if the report be sound; and what is meant by it is the occupying oneself with knowledge away from deed. T.
