, peace be upon him, said: Rise at morning a scholar, or a learner, or love the people of knowledge; and do not be a fourth, lest you perish by hatred of them.

«12»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin; ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: There is no good in living save for two men: a scholar who is obeyed, or a listener who retains (1).

«13»- ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: Rise at morning a scholar, or a learner, or a listener, or one who loves them; and do not be the fifth, lest you perish.

«14»- And he — may God bless him and his family — said: The looking upon the face of the scholar is worship.

«15»- ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: It is related from one of the truthful ones, peace be upon them, that people are four: a man who knows and knows that he knows — that one is a guide, a scholar, so follow him; and a man who knows and does not know that he knows — that one is heedless, so awaken him; and a man who does not know and knows that he does not know — that one is ignorant, so teach him; and a man who does not know and thinks that he knows — that one is astray, so guide him.

«16»- b, Qurb al-Isnad: Ibn Zarif (2), from Ibn 'Ulwan (3), from Ja'far, from his father, peace be upon him, that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: If knowledge were suspended at the Pleiades, men of Persia would attain it.

45.With the dotted za', on the pattern of sharif. He is al-Husayn b. Zarif b. Nasih al-Kufi, trustworthy, with the agnomen Abu Muhammad; he dwelt at Baghdad; he has a book of Nawadir. Thus al-Najashi said at p. 45.
With damma on the undotted 'ayn and quiescence of the lam. He is al-Husayn b. 'Ulwan al-Kalbi. Al-Najashi entered him in his Rijal, p. 38, saying: al-Husayn b. 'Ulwan al-Kalbi, their client, of Kufa, a Sunni; and his brother al-Hasan, with the agnomen Abu Muhammad, is trustworthy. They both related from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him. And al-Husayn has no book; and al-Hasan is more particularly ours and the worthier. And al-Kashshi said at p. 247: Muhammad b. Ishaq, and Muhammad b. al-Munkadir, and 'Amr b. Khalid al-Wasiti, and 'Abd al-Malik b. Jurayj, and al-Husayn b. 'Ulwan, and al-Kalbi — these are of the men of the Sunnis, save that they had an inclination and a strong love. And it has been said that al-Kalbi was concealing his belief and was not an opponent.
