"And they have found easy what the luxurious found rough": al-wa'r of land is the opposite of the level; and al-mutraf is the one given ease — that is, they found easy what those living in ease found hard, of the casting off of appetites and the severing of attachments. "And they have grown intimate with what the ignorant shrank from in dread" — of acts of obedience and of the drawing near and of strivings in religion. "They kept company with this world in bodies", and so forth — that is, though in their bodies they kept company with this creation, yet in their spirits they were set apart from them; rather their spirits were attached to His nearness and His union, exalted be He, keeping company with those brought near to His presence, of the prophets and the angels brought near. "Those are the vicegerents of God in His earth": the defining of the subject by the demonstrative is to indicate that it is worthy of what is predicated of it after it, by reason of its being qualified by the descriptions mentioned before it — as they said concerning His words, exalted be He: "Those are upon guidance from their Lord, and those are the prosperers" (1). And in the copies of the Nahj al-Balagha, "ah, ah"; and in the rest of them, in some "hay hay" and in some "hah hah". And upon all the readings the aim is the showing of longing for them and of grief at parting from them — and if some of these have not come in the lexicon, yet in usage they are current (2). And we have expounded this report with a little exposition because of the abundance of its profit for the seekers; and it is fitting that they look into it every day with the eye of certainty. And we shall clarify some of its benefits in the Book of the Imamate, if God the Exalted wills.

So we are the scholars, and our Shi'a are the learners, and the rest of people are scum.

. ط.And this is among the strange of his words, God's mercy be upon him. How can it be conceived that there should be a word conveying a meaning by usage, employed by one such as he, peace be upon him — and he the most eloquent orator of the Arabs — and then the lexicon not know it? And what is usage but what is known of the language, which its people know at the stage of employment? T.
(٣)غدا يغدو غدوا، اي ذهب غدوة، انطلق، و يستعمل بمعنى «صار» فيرفع المبتدأ و ينصب الخبر.ghada yaghdu ghuduwwan — that is, he went in the early morning, he set out; and it is used in the sense of "became", so that it raises the subject and puts the predicate in the accusative.
