by his setting it right (1). And al-hamaj has already passed. And al-ra'a' are the young louts among the common folk and the base and their like. And al-na'iq is the call of the shepherd to his sheep, and it is said also of the cry of the crow. And what is meant is that, having no firmness upon any one of the beliefs and being unsteady in the matter of religion, they follow every caller and believe every claimant, and they blunder as the night-blind camel blunders, without distinguishing between the one in the right and the one in the wrong. And perhaps in the pluralizing of this class and the making singular of the first two classes there is an intimation of the fewness of those two and the multitude of this one, as the Shaykh al-Baha'i, God's mercy be upon him, mentioned. And the firm support is the true, demonstrative, certain beliefs upon which reliance is placed in the repelling of ambiguities and the lifting of the hardship of acts of obedience. And "knowledge guards you" — that is, from the fears of this world and of the hereafter, and from trials and doubts and satanic whisperings. And "wealth — expenditure diminishes it"; and in f, "consumes it". And "knowledge grows by the expending" — that is, it grows and increases by it, either because much study occasions abundance of practice and strength of thought, or because God the Exalted pours out from the treasuries of His knowledge upon one who is not miserly with it.
And the Shaykh al-Baha'i, God's mercy be upon him, said: the word 'ala may be in the sense of ma'a, as they said concerning His words, exalted be He: "And indeed your Lord is possessed of forgiveness for people despite their wrongdoing" (2); and it may be for causation and reason, as they said concerning His words, exalted be He: "and that you may magnify God for that He has guided you" (3). And in f, after that: "and knowledge is the judge and wealth is that which is judged upon" — since by knowledge judgement is given concerning properties in litigation, and it is taken from one of the two adversaries and turned over to the other; and likewise the expending of it and the gathering of it are in accordance with the knowledge of the ways of acquiring it and of its disbursements. "The love of the scholar is a religion by which one is served": al-din is obedience and recompense — that is, an obedience which is the recompense of the blessings of God and a thanksgiving for them; or its possessor is requited and recompensed by it; or the love of the scholar, who is the Imam, is a religion and a creed by which God is worshipped, and acts of obedience are not accepted save by it.
And in ma: "the companionship of the scholar is a religion by which God is served" — that is, a worship by which God is worshipped.
And in the Nahj al-Balagha: "the knowing of knowledge is a religion by which one is served."
