«6»- ma, the Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: al-Mufid, from al-Saduq, from his father, from Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim Majiluwayh, from Muhammad b. 'Ali al-Sayrafi, from Nasr b. Muzahim, from 'Umar b. Sa'd, from Fudayl b. Khadij (1), from Kumayl b. Ziyad al-Nakha'i, who said: I was with the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon them both, in the mosque of Kufa, and we had prayed the later evening prayer. He took my hand until we went out from the mosque, and he walked until he came out to the back of Kufa, not speaking a word to me. And when he came into the open country he drew a breath, then said: O Kumayl, indeed these hearts are vessels, and the best of them is the most retentive. Retain from me what I say — to the end of the report. Except that in it is: the companionship of the scholar is a religion by which God is served. O Kumayl, the benefit of wealth passes away with its passing. O Kumayl, the hoarders of wealth have died, and the scholars endure as long as time endures: their persons are lost, but their likenesses are present in hearts. Ah, ah! Indeed here doubt strikes fire by an ambiguity — manifest and well known, or concealed and obscure — and His clear signs; and indeed those are the spirits of certainty, what he found rough — the vicegerents of God in His earth and the callers to His religion. Ah, ah — how I long for the sight of them! And I ask forgiveness of God for myself and for you. Then he withdrew his hand from my hand and said: Depart when you wish.

«7»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: Kumayl b. Ziyad said: The Commander of the Faithful 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon them both, took my hand and brought me out to the graveyard. And when he came into the open country he drew a deep sigh (2), then said: O Kumayl, indeed these hearts are vessels (3) — the report.

The book al-Gharat of al-Thaqafi, by his chain, the like of it. Elucidation: this report will come with numerous chains (4) in the chapter on the necessity of the Proof. And al-jabban and al-jabbana, with the doubling, are the open country; and the graveyards are also called by these two names. And ashara means he went out to the open country. And aw'aha — that is, the most retentive of them for knowledge and the most comprehensive. And al-rabbani is a relative form from al-rabb with the addition of the alif and the nun, contrary to analogy, like al-raqbani. Al-Jawhari said: al-rabbani is the devout one who knows God the Exalted; and likewise said al-Fayruzabadi. And he said in al-Kashshaf: al-rabbani is the one firm in cleaving to the religion of God the Exalted and to obedience to Him. And he said in Majma' al-Bayan: he is the one who orders the affair of people by his management and

(٣)جمع الوعاء- بكسر الواو و ضمها-: ما يجمع و يحفظ فيه الشي ء. شبهها عليه السلام بالاوعية لكونها محلا للعلوم و المعارف.The plural of al-wi'a — with kasra on the waw and with damma — is that in which a thing is gathered and kept. He, peace be upon him, likened them to vessels because they are the place of the sciences and of the knowledge of realities.
