and wealth, and a treasure, and provision, and a shelter, and a guide, and a comrade — all of them inward and spiritual. Then he, peace be upon him, set forth the correspondence of this spiritual person, in all its parts, to this bodily frame, in completion of the likeness and in declaration that knowledge, when it settles in the heart of a man, takes possession of all his limbs and its effects appear from every one of them. So the head of knowledge, which is humility, takes possession of this bodily head and drives out from it pride and haughtiness, of which it is the seat, and employs it in what humility requires of brokenness and self-abasement. And just as the bodily head, by its removal, removes the life of the body, so likewise by the removal of humility before the Creator and the creatures the life of knowledge is removed, and it becomes like a body without a spirit, not becoming a source of any effect. And these two aspects are to be observed in all the clauses; and the mention of them would occasion prolixity, and what we have mentioned suffices those possessed of understanding.

«42»- sn, al-Mahasin: my father, from Yunus, from Abu Ja'far al-Ahwal, from al-Ahwal, from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, who said: There is no latitude for people until they ask or gain understanding.

«43»- sn, al-Mahasin: my father and Musa b. al-Qasim, from Yunus, from some of our companions, who said: Abu al-Hasan Musa b. Ja'far, peace be upon them both, was asked: Is there latitude for people in leaving off the asking about what they have need of? He said: No.

«44»- sn, al-Mahasin: al-Nawfali, from al-Sakuni, from Abu 'Abd Allah, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Fie upon every Muslim who does not set aside in every week a day in which he gains understanding of the matter of his religion and asks about his religion. And some have related: Fie upon every Muslim man.

Elucidation: what is meant by al-jum'a is the week — naming the whole by the name of the part.

«45»- sn, al-Mahasin: Ja'far b. Muhammad al-Ash'ari, from al-Qaddah, from Abu 'Abd Allah, from his father, peace be upon him, who said: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said in a discourse of his: Let not the ignorant man be ashamed, when he does not know, to learn.

«46»- ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: in the hadith of Abu Umama al-Bahili, that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Take to knowledge before it is seized and before it is gathered — and he joined together two of his fingers, the middle one and the one next to the thumb. Then he said: The scholar and the learner are partners in the reward, and there is no good in the rest of people thereafter.

Elucidation: perhaps what is meant by the gathering is likewise the seizing of it and the taking of it from its places, that it may be gathered in a single place —
