profits in the hereafter, since it is forgotten, and the confining of one's concern to the acquiring of livelihood and to the mending of the affairs of this world, since these are ever before his eyes. And it is also possible that what is meant by intellect is the knowledge of what profits in the hereafter, and what is meant by knowledge is the complete knowledge that bequeaths action. So what is meant is: what is it with people that they know death and the reckoning and the punishment and believe in them, yet the trace of that knowledge does not appear in their deeds, so that in the faults they commit they are as though they knew nothing of that? And the answer is evident. And it appears that here is a miscopying from the copyists, and it was la ya'malun, with the mim before the lam; so it comes back to what we mentioned last. And God knows.
