of Resurrection against those who wrong people, "and against the doers of good there is no way". And when he comes to you and says to you: how great is your beneficence — wishing to bring you into self-admiration — say: my evildoing is more than my beneficence. And when he comes to you and says to you: how much is your prayer — say: my heedlessness is more than my prayer. And when he says to you: how much do you give to people — say: what I take is more than what I give. And when he says to you: how many there are who wrong you — say: those I have wronged are more. And when he comes to you and says to you: how much you do — say: long have I disobeyed. God, blessed and exalted, when He created the lowest, it boasted and swelled (1) and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created the earth and spread it out upon its back, and it was humbled. Then the earth boasted and said: what thing can overcome me? So God created the mountains and fixed them upon its back as pegs, lest it should sway (2) with them upon it; and the earth was humbled and settled. Then the mountains boasted over the earth and rose high (3) and stretched up and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created iron, and it cut them, and they were humbled. Then iron boasted over the mountains and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created fire, and it melted the iron, and iron was humbled. Then the fire roared (4) and blazed up (5) and boasted and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created water, and it quenched it, and it was humbled. Then water boasted and swelled and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created the wind, and it moved its waves and stirred up what was in its depths and held it back from its courses, and water was humbled. Then the wind boasted and blew hard and said: what thing can overcome me? So He created man, and he built and contrived what he might shelter behind from the wind and from other things, and the wind was humbled. Then man was overweening and said: who is stronger than I in power? So He created death, and it subdued him, and man was humbled. Then death boasted within itself; so God, Almighty and Glorious, said: do not boast, for I shall slaughter you (6) between the two parties, the people of the Garden and the people of the Fire, and then I shall never bring you to life again. So it feared. Then he said: And forbearance overcomes anger, and mercy overcomes displeasure, and charity overcomes fault.

(١)أي افتخرت.That is, it boasted.
(٢)أي تتحرك و تضطرب.That is, that it should move and be shaken.
(٣)أي علت.That is, they rose high.
(٤)أي سمع صوت توقدها.That is, the sound of its kindling was heard.
(٥)لعل المراد بشهقتها ارتفاع نيرانها و شعلتها.Perhaps what is meant by its shahqa is the rising of its flames and its blaze.
(٦)لعل المراد بذبح الموت إعدام أسبابه.Perhaps what is meant by the slaughtering of death is the annihilation of its causes.
