and kindness and silence (1). This is what branches for the man of intellect through his forbearance. As for knowledge, there branches from it sufficiency, though he be poor; and generosity, though he be miserly; and awe-inspiring dignity, though he be of no account; and safety, though he be sick; and nearness, though he be far off; and modesty, though he be boastful; and elevation, though he be lowly; and honour, though he be base; and wisdom, and favour. This is what branches for the man of intellect through his knowledge. So blessed is he who has intellect and knowledge. As for right direction, there branches from it soundness of judgement, guidance, piety, God-fearing, attainment, moderation, frugality, reward, nobility, and knowledge of God's religion. This is what the man of intellect attains through right direction. So blessed is he who thereby stands upon the highroad of the path. As for chastity, there branches from it contentment, humble submission, good fortune, rest, self-examination, humility, recollection, reflection, generosity and open-handedness. This is what branches for the man of intellect through his chastity — contentment with God and with His apportioning. As for self-guarding, there branches from it soundness, humility, scrupulousness, turning back to God, understanding, discipline, beneficence, the endearing of oneself, good, and the shunning of evil. This is what the man of intellect attains through self-guarding. So blessed is he whom his Master has honoured with self-guarding. As for modesty, there branches from it gentleness, compassion, watchfulness for God in secret and in the open, safety, the shunning of evil, cheerfulness, liberality (2), triumph, and fair praise of the man among people. This is what the man of intellect attains through modesty. So blessed is he who accepts God's counsel and fears His disgracing him. As for gravity, there branches from it kindliness, resolution, the rendering of the trust, the leaving of betrayal, truthfulness of tongue, the guarding of the private parts, the setting right of property, preparedness against the enemy, the forbidding of the reprehensible, and the leaving of foolishness. This is what the man of intellect attains through gravity. So blessed is he who is dignified, and who has no levity nor ignorance, and who pardons and overlooks. As for perseverance in good, there branches from it the leaving of enormities, distance from rashness (3)
