denial. And open contention is dispute and wrangling; and in sn: "forbearing courtesy, and its opposite harshness". And soundness in absence — that is, in his absence another is safe from his harm; and its opposite is guile, which is that he flatters outwardly for deceit and cunning, while in absence he is in the position of doing harm. And in sn: "soundness of heart, and its opposite guile"; and perhaps that is more fitting.

And concealment, that is, the concealing of the faults of the believers and their secrets, or of everything it is obligatory or fitting to conceal — such as the concealing of the truth in a position of prudent dissimulation, and the concealing of knowledge from those unfit for it. And prayer, that is, the guarding of it and of its proprieties and its times; and its opposite is the impairing of its conditions or its proprieties or the times of its excellence. And the casting away of the covenant — that is, its throwing off — was made the opposite of the pilgrimage only because of what will come in many reports, that God the Exalted deposited in the Stone the covenants of the servants, and that the reason for the pilgrimage is the renewal of the covenant at the Stone, so that it will bear witness on the Day of Resurrection for everyone who comes to it. And perhaps what is meant by genuineness is sincerity in worship, since by abandoning it the reality of worship is annulled; and this clause too is close to the clause of sincerity and adulteration. So either it is to be construed as repetition, or sincerity is to be construed upon its completeness — in that there is not mixed with it desire for the Garden nor fear of the Fire, nor the drawing of benefit nor the repelling of harm — and genuineness upon the absence of showing off before created beings. And the good, that is, choosing it and performing it and enjoining it; and likewise the reprehensible. And flaunting is the display of adornment; and perhaps this clause is particular to women, though it is possible to generalize it so as to include men's covering their nakedness and their faults. And broadcasting is divulging. And equity is evenness and justice between himself and another, and between near kin and those far off; and partisanship entails his preferring himself to another even if the other has the better right, and preferring his clan and his kin to those far off even if the right is with those far off. And al-mihna, with kasra and with fatha and with the vowelling, like kalima, is skill in service and in work: mahanahu, on the pattern of mana'ahu and nasarahu, mahnan and mihnatan — and it is also given with kasra — he served him, and he beat him, and he wore him out. Thus in al-Qamus. And what is meant is the service of the Imams of truth and obedience to them; and insolence is rising against them and not complying with them. And in al-Kafi and sn it is al-tahyi'a, and it has come in the sense of accord and setting right, and it comes back to what we have mentioned. And al-jal' in some copies is with jim, and it is little modesty; and in some of them with the dotted kha', that is, the casting off of the garment of modesty, and that is a widespread figure. And moderation is the choosing of the mean in affairs and the keeping to the middle path that leads to deliverance. And rest, that is, the choosing of what brings it about with respect to the two worlds, not the rest of this world only. And ease is compliance with ease and gentleness
