«3»- 'a, 'Ilal al-Shara'i'; l, al-Khisal: Ahmad b. Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Rahman al-Marwazi, from Muhammad b. Ja'far al-Muqri' al-Jurjani, from Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Mawsili, from Muhammad b. 'Asim al-Tarifi, from 'Ayyash b. Yazid b. al-Hasan b. 'Ali al-Kahhal, client of Zayd b. 'Ali, from his father, from Musa b. Ja'far, from his father Ja'far b. Muhammad, from his father Muhammad b. 'Ali, from his father 'Ali b. al-Husayn, from his father al-Husayn b. 'Ali, from his father the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon them both, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: God created the intellect from a light stored and hidden in His foreknowledge, which no sent prophet and no angel brought near has looked upon. He made knowledge its self, understanding its spirit, abstinence its head, modesty its two eyes, wisdom its tongue, compassion its concern, and mercy its heart. Then He filled it out and strengthened it with ten things: with certainty, faith, truthfulness, tranquillity, sincerity, gentleness, giving, contentment, submission and gratitude. Then He, Almighty and Glorious, said: Go back — and it went back. Then He said to it: Come forward — and it came forward. Then He said to it: Speak. It said: Praise be to God, who has no opposite and no equal, no likeness and no peer and no match and no similitude; He before whose greatness everything is submissive and lowly. So the Lord, blessed and exalted, said: By My might and My majesty, I have not created a creature fairer than you, nor more obedient to Me than you, nor higher than you, nor nobler than you, nor dearer than you. By you I am declared one, and by you I am worshipped, and by you I am called upon, and by you I am hoped in, and by you I am sought, and by you I am feared, and by you caution is taken, and by you is the reward, and by you is the punishment. So the intellect at that fell down prostrate, and it was in its prostration a thousand years. Then the Lord, blessed and exalted, said: Raise your head, and ask and you shall be given, and intercede and your intercession shall be accepted. So the intellect raised its head and said: My God, I ask You to accept my intercession for the one in whom You created me. So God, majestic be His majesty, said to His angels: I call you to witness that I have accepted its intercession for the one in whom I created it.
