And what (1) has appeared to us from following the reports ascribed to the righteous Imams, God's peace be upon them, is that God has created in every one of the persons subject to obligation a power and a preparedness to perceive matters — harms, benefits and other things — with much difference between them in it. The least of its degrees is the criterion of obligation, and by it he is distinguished from the insane; and by the difference of its degrees the obligations vary. So the more complete this power is, the more burdensome and the more numerous the obligations. And this power is perfected in each person, according to his preparedness, by knowledge and by action; so whenever he strives to acquire what benefits him of the true sciences and acts by them, that power is strengthened. Then the sciences vary in the degrees of deficiency and of perfection; and whenever it increases in strength its effects become more numerous, and it urges its possessor, according to its strength, to act by them. For most people, their knowledge of the Origin and the Return and the rest of the pillars of faith is a conceptual knowledge which they call assent; and in some of them it is a conjectural assent; and in some of them a compelled assent. For that reason they do not act by what they claim. But when knowledge is perfected and reaches the degree of certainty, its effects appear upon its possessor at every moment. And the complete verification of that will come in the Book of Faith and Unbelief, if God the Exalted wills.

The third: the power which people employ in the ordering of the affairs of their livelihood. If it accords with the canon of the sacred law and is employed in what the Lawgiver has approved, it is called the intellect of livelihood, and it is praised in the reports; and its distinctness from what has passed is by a kind of consideration. And when it is employed in false matters and corrupt stratagems, it is called cunning and devilry in the tongue of the sacred law. And some have posited another power for that, which is not established.

ط.What he mentions, may God have mercy on him, of the meanings of the intellect, claiming that they are the technical usages for the meanings of the intellect, applies only to what the people of investigation have technically fixed upon; and not to what the generality of people other than them hold — as is not hidden from one expert and versed in these investigations. And what led him into what he fell into are two things. The first: ill opinion of those who investigate the intellectual sciences by way of reason and demonstration. The second: the way he followed in understanding the meanings of the reports, in that he took them all at a single level of exposition — namely the one that general understandings attain, which is the level at which most of the reports answering the questions of the majority of those who questioned them, peace be upon them, were sent down; whereas among the reports are choice ones pointing to realities that none attain but lofty understandings and pure intellects. So that brought about the confusion of the divine sciences flowing from them, peace be upon them, and the spoiling of the lofty expositions by bringing them down to a level that is not theirs, and the spoiling of the simple expositions too, by their losing their distinctness and their definiteness. For not every questioner among the transmitters is at one level of understanding, nor is every reality at one level of subtlety and delicacy. And the Book and the Sunna are filled with the fact that the divine sciences of the religion have differing degrees, that each degree has its own people, and that in the cancelling of the degrees lies the destruction of the true sciences.
