Commander of the Faithful, if only you would carry your words on from where you left off. He said: Far from it, Ibn 'Abbas. That was a froth of the camel's rage: it bubbled up, and then it subsided. Ibn 'Abbas said: By God, I have never grieved over any speech as I grieved over this speech, that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, did not reach in it the point he intended. [2]
Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: As for Ibn 'Abbas's words, “I never grieved over any speech” — my shaykh Abu al-Khayr Musaddiq b. Shabib al-Wasiti related to me in the year six hundred and three, saying: I read this sermon to the shaykh Abu Muhammad 'Abd Allah b. Ahmad, known as Ibn al-Khashshab; and when I reached this place he said to me: Had I heard Ibn 'Abbas say this, I would have said to him: And did there remain in your cousin's soul any matter he did not reach in this sermon, that you should grieve he did not attain of his speech what he intended? By God, he spared neither the first of them nor the last. [3]
And in the Bihar, from Kashf al-Yaqin, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: I used to watch for the anger of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, when he mentioned something, or when a report stirred him. Then one day some of his partisans in Syria wrote to him, mentioning in his letter that Mu'awiya, 'Amr b. al-'As, 'Utba b. Abi Sufyan, al-Walid b. 'Uqba and Marwan had gathered before Mu'awiya and had mentioned the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and reviled him, and had put about among the people that he disparages the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and mentions each one of them with what he deserves.
And that was when he, peace be upon him, had ordered his companions to wait for him at al-Nukhayla, and they entered Kufa and left him; and that weighed heavily upon him.
And this report came; so I came to his door by night and said: O Qanbar, what is the news of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him? He said: He is asleep. But he, peace be upon him, heard my words and said: Who is this?
I said: Ibn 'Abbas, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: Enter. So I entered, and there he was, seated apart from his bed in a single garment, in the posture of one troubled. I said: What ails you this night, Commander of the Faithful? He said: Woe to you, Ibn 'Abbas; and how
