حفظت رسول الله فينا وعهده إليك ، ومن أولى بها منك من ومن ألست أخاه في الهدى ، ووصيه وأعلم قهرا بالكتاب ، وبالسنن ثم ساق صاحب المقنع الكلام إلى أن قال : وروى أصحاب السير عن أبي الأسود الدئلي ، إنه قال : حدثني من سمع أم أيمن رضي الله عنها ، تقول : سمعت في الليلة التي بويع فيها أبو بكر هاتفا يقول ولا أرى شخصه : لقد ضعضع الإسلام فقدان أحمد وأبكى عليه فيكم كل مسلم وأحزنه حزنا تمالوا صحبة الغواة ، علي الهادي الرضي المكرم وصي رسول الله أول مسلم وأعلم من صلى وزكى بدرهم أخي المصطفى دون الذين تأمروا عليه ، وأن بزوه فضل التقدم قد أوردنا نظما ونثرا ما يستدل به العاقل على أن القوم عاملوا أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام بما عمل بنو إسرائيل بهارون أخي موسى خذو النعل بالنعل فصار حكم أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام وحكم هارون واحدا .

— You kept the Messenger of God among us, and his covenant with you; and who is worthier of it than you — who, and who? — Are you not his brother in guidance, and his legatee, and by far the most knowing in the Book and in the sunnas? — Then the author of al-Muqni' carried his words on until he said: And the authors of the biographies related from Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali that he said: There related to me one who heard Umm Ayman, may God be pleased with her, say: On the night on which Abu Bakr was given allegiance, I heard a caller saying — and I did not see his person: — Truly Islam has been shaken by the loss of Ahmad, and every Muslim among you has wept for him; — and it has grieved him with a grief, that the company of the misguided should have conspired against 'Ali — the guide, the well-pleasing, the honoured, — the legatee of the Messenger of God, the first Muslim, and the most knowing of those who prayed and gave the alms of a dirham, — the brother of al-Mustafa, apart from those who took command over him, and who stripped from him the merit of precedence. — We have set forth, in verse and in prose, that from which the man of intellect may draw the proof that the people dealt with the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, as the Children of Israel dealt with Harun the brother of Musa — sandal matching sandal — so that the case of the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, and the case of Harun became one.

وما أحسن قول محمد بن نصر بن بسام الكاتب : إن عليا لم يزل محنة لرابح الدين ومغبون

And how excellent is the word of Muhammad b. Nasr b. Bassam the secretary: — Truly 'Ali has never ceased to be a trial for the one who profits in religion and for the one who is cheated of it —
