— for the affair is only among you and to you, and none has a claim to it but Abu Hasan. — O 'Ali, Abu Hasan, grasp it with a resolute hand; for you are equal to the affair that is hoped for. — And Khuzayma b. Thabit, he of the two testimonies, may God be pleased with him, said on the day of the Saqifa: — I never thought this affair would be moved away from Hashim, and then, from among them, away from Abu Hasan. — Was he not the first who prayed towards your qibla, and the most knowing of people in the Qur'an and the sunnas, — and the last of the people to be with the Prophet, and he whom Gabriel aided in the washing and the shrouding? — What is it that has turned you back from him, that we may know it? Truly your pledge of allegiance is the most cheating of cheats. — And these verses have been ascribed to 'Utba b. Abi Lahab b. 'Abd al-Muttalib.

And Khuzayma also said, addressing 'A'isha bint Abi Bakr: — O 'A'isha, leave off 'Ali and your reproach of him for what is not in him. — You are only the one who bore a parent; and he is the legatee of the Messenger of God, apart from his household — and you were a witness to what was of that. — And al-Nu'man b. 'Ajlan al-Ansari said on the day of the Saqifa, alluding to 'Amr b. al-'As: — You said that the setting up of Sa'd was forbidden — and your own setting up of 'Atiq the son of 'Amr, who was the intimate of Abu Bakr!
