Section [on part of what took place at the Saqifa]. Our shaykh al-Mufid said in the Irshad: The people seized the opportunity of 'Ali b. Abi Talib's being occupied, peace be upon him, with the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, and of the Banu Hashim's being cut off from them by their affliction in the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family. And the narration has come that when there was accomplished for Abu Bakr what was accomplished, and those who pledged allegiance had pledged, a man came to the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, while he was levelling the grave of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, with a spade in his hand. He said to him: The people have pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr; the Ansar were abandoned to failure through their disagreement, and the freed men hastened to conclude it for the man, fearing that you should attain the affair. So he, peace be upon him, set the edge of the spade upon the ground with his hand upon it, and then said: “In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Alif Lam Mim. Do people suppose that they will be left” — to His words, “what they judge.” [1] And Abu Sufyan had come to the door of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, while 'Ali, peace be upon him,
