And Ibn Abi al-Hadid also related, from Ahmad b. 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Jawhari, from Hisham b. Muhammad, from his father, who said: Fatima, peace be upon her, said to Abu Bakr: Umm Ayman testifies for me that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, gave me Fadak. And he said to her: O daughter of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, by God, God has not created a creature dearer to me than the Messenger of God, your father; and I would have loved that the sky had fallen upon the earth the day your father died!!
By God, that 'A'isha should become poor is dearer to me than that you should become poor!!
Do you suppose that I would give the black and the red and the white his right, and wrong you of your right?!
And you are the daughter of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family! This property was not the Prophet's, may God bless him and his Family; it was only a property of the properties of the Muslims, with which the Prophet, may God bless him and his Family, mounted the men and which he spent in the way of God. So when the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, died, I took charge of it as he used to take charge of it.
She said: By God, I shall never speak to you. He said: By God, I shall never shun you. She said: By God, I shall call upon God against you. He said: By God, I shall call upon God for you. And when death came to her, she charged that he should not pray over her. So she was buried by night, and al-'Abbas b. 'Abd al-Muttalib prayed over her. And between her death and her father's death were seventy-two nights. [4]
[A quotation of al-Jahiz's words] I say: Abu 'Uthman al-Jahiz said, according to what 'Alam al-Huda al-Murtada, may God be pleased with him, related from him: Some people have claimed that the proof of the truthfulness of the report of those two — meaning Abu Bakr and 'Umar — in the barring of the inheritance, and of the clearness of their record, is the companions of the Messenger of God's leaving off to condemn them. Then he said: It is said to them: If the leaving off of condemnation is a proof of their truthfulness, then the leaving off of condemnation of those who complained of the wrong in it, and argued against the two of them, and made demands of them, must be a proof of the truth of their claim and of the soundness of their saying — the more so as the disputes were long and the exchanges and the wranglings were many, and the resistance appeared and the grievance grew severe; and it reached such a point with Fatima, peace be upon her, that she charged that Abu Bakr should not pray over her.
