Section [Abu Bakr's speech to the people after the saying of Fatima (peace be upon her)]. Ibn Abi al-Hadid related, in the course of the reports of Fadak, from Ahmad b. 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Jawhari: that when Abu Bakr heard the sermon of Fatima, peace be upon her, concerning Fadak, her speech weighed heavily upon him. So he mounted the pulpit and said: O people, what is this eager listening to every tale? Where were these desires in the time of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family?
Let him who has heard speak, and him who has witnessed say his word. He is but a fox whose witness is his own tail, clinging to every discord; he it is who says: Turn it back young again, after it has grown old. You seek aid of the weak and seek help of the women, like Umm Tihal, whose dearest to her of her people was the adulterer. Now, were I to wish to speak, I would speak; and were I to speak, I would disclose. I am silent so long as I am left alone. Then he turned to the Ansar and said: Word has reached me, O company of the Ansar, of the speech of your fools. And the worthiest to keep the covenant of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his Family, are you — for he came to you and you sheltered and helped. Now, I am not one to stretch out a hand or a tongue against him who does not deserve it from us. Then he came down; and Fatima, peace be upon her, went away to her dwelling.
Then Ibn Abi al-Hadid said: I read this speech to the naqib Yahya b. Abi Zayd al-Basri, and said to him: At whom is he hinting?
And he said: Rather, he is speaking openly. I said: Had he spoken openly I would not have asked you. So he laughed and said: At 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him. I said: Is all this speech said by him of 'Ali, peace be upon him? He said: Yes — it is kingship, my son. I said: Then what was the speech of the Ansar? He said:
