«5»- sn, al-Mahasin: 'Ali b. al-Hakam, from Hisham, who said: Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, said: When God created the intellect He said to it: Come forward — and it came forward. Then He said to it: Go back — and it went back. Then He said: By My might and My majesty, I have not created a creature more beloved to Me than you. By you I take, and by you I give, and upon you I reward.

«6»- sn, al-Mahasin: my father, from 'Abd Allah b. al-Fadl al-Nawfali, from his father, from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: God created the intellect and said to it: Go back — and it went back. Then He said to it: Come forward — and it came forward. Then He said: I have not created a creature more beloved to Me than you. Then God gave Muhammad — may God bless him and his family — ninety-nine parts, then apportioned one single part among the servants.

«7»- ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: The Prophet — may God bless him and his family — said: The first thing God created was my light.

«8»- And in another tradition, that he — may God bless him and his family — said: The first thing God created was the intellect.

«9»- And it is related by another route that God, Almighty and Glorious, when He created the intellect, said to it: Come forward — and it came forward. Then He said to it: Go back — and it went back. Then He, exalted be He, said: By My might and My majesty, I have not created a creature more honoured with Me than you. By you I reward, and by you I punish, and by you I take, and by you I give.

«10»- 'a, 'Ilal al-Shara'i': my father, from Sa'd, from Ibn Hashim, from Ibn Ma'bad (1), from al-Husayn b. Khalid, from Ishaq, who said: I said to Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him: There is the man I come to and speak to with part of my speech, and he understands the whole of it; and among them is one I come to and speak to with the speech, and he takes in the whole of my speech and then repeats it back to me as I spoke it; and among them is one I come to and speak to, and he says: Repeat it to me. He said: Ishaq, do you not know why this is? I said: No. He said: The one you speak to with part of your speech and he understands the whole of it — that is one whose seed was kneaded with his intellect. As for the one you speak to and he takes in your speech and then answers you upon your speech — that is one whose intellect was compounded in him in his mother's belly. And as for the one you speak to with the speech and he says: Repeat it to me — that is one whose intellect was compounded in him after he had grown up; and so he says: Repeat it to me.

Elucidation: His words "then repeats it back to me" — that is, the substance of the speech as he heard it, or he answers in accordance with what I spoke to him; and the second is the more evident. Then know that it is possible that the speech runs by way of metaphor, to set out the difference of souls in their essential preparednesses — that is, it is as though his seed were kneaded with his intellect, for example. And it is possible that what is meant
