al-Hasan b. Zayd had sent to us one of his trusted men with his letter and his seal, giving surety, and had guaranteed to us the return of our properties and the making good of the loss that had befallen us in them; and that we were setting out for the town to obtain what had been promised us (1). The Imam, peace be upon him, said: "Surely God's promise is true." Then on the tenth day there came to us the letter of our two fathers, saying that the Summoner had fulfilled for them all his promises (2), and commanding us to keep close to the Imam of great blessing, the truthful in promise. When the Imam, peace be upon him, heard this, he said: This is the time of my fulfilling what I promised you of the commentary of the Qur'an. Then he said: I have appointed for you each day some portion of it, which you are to write down. So keep close to me and be constant in it, and God Almighty will make abundant your portions of felicity.

I say: in some copies the beginning of the chain runs thus: Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Ja'far b. al-Daqqaq said: There related to me the two Shaykhs, the two jurists, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Ali b. al-Hasan b. Shadhan and Abu Muhammad Ja'far b. Ahmad b. 'Ali al-Qummi, may God have mercy on them both, who said: There related to us the Shaykh, the jurist, Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babawayh, may God have mercy on him — to the end of what has passed.

And al-Saduq said in the Kitab Ikmal al-Din: The Shaykh, the jurist, Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa b. Babawayh al-Qummi, the compiler of this book — may God aid him in obeying Him — said: What called me to compose this book of mine was that, when I had fulfilled my desire of visiting 'Ali b. Musa al-Rida, God's blessings be upon him, I returned to Naysabur and stayed there. And I found that most of those of the Shi'a who frequented me had been bewildered by the occultation, and that doubt had entered upon them in the matter of the Qa'im, peace be upon him, and that they had turned from the way of submission to opinions and analogies. So I set about expending my utmost effort (3) in guiding them to the truth and returning them to what is right, by means of the reports that have come down concerning that from the Prophet and the Imams, God's blessings be upon them — until there came to us from Bukhara a shaykh from among the people of excellence, learning and distinction (4) in the town of Qum, whose meeting I had long wished for and whose sight I had longed for, on account of his religion, the soundness of his judgement and the straightness of his way: the Shaykh al-Din Abu Sa'id Muhammad b. al-Hasan b. 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Ahmad b. 'Ali b. al-Salt al-Qummi, may God perpetuate his success.
