Muhtadi b. Harith al-Husayni al-Mar'ashi, from the Shaykh al-Saduq Abu 'Abd Allah Ja'far b. Muhammad al-Duristi, from his father, from the Shaykh, the jurist, Abu Ja'far Muhammad b. 'Ali b. Babawayh al-Qummi, may God the Exalted have mercy on him. He said: There informed us Abu al-Hasan Muhammad b. al-Qasim al-Astarabadi the preacher, may God the Exalted have mercy on him. He said: There related to me Abu Ya'qub Yusuf b. Muhammad b. Ziyad and Abu al-Hasan 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Sayyar (1) — and the two of them were of the Imami Shi'a — who said: Our fathers were Imamis, and the Zaydis were the dominant party at Astarabad. That was under the rule of al-Hasan b. Zayd al-'Alawi, styled the Summoner to the Truth, the Imam of the Zaydis (2); and he listened much to them, and would kill people upon their informing. So we feared for ourselves on their account, and went out with our households to the presence of the Imam al-Hasan b. 'Ali b. Muhammad, the father of the Qa'im, peace be upon him. We lodged our families in one of the caravanserais (3), then sought leave to enter upon the Imam al-Hasan b. 'Ali, peace be upon them both. When he saw us he said: Welcome to those who take refuge with us, who seek shelter in our care (4). God has accepted your striving, and made secure your fright (5), and sufficed you against your enemies. So return, secure as to yourselves and as to your properties. We marvelled at his saying that to us, though we did not doubt his truthfulness in what he said. So we said: What do you command us to do, O Imam, until we come to be there? And how are we to enter that town from which we fled, while the sultan of the town seeks us urgently (6) and his threat against us is severe? He said: Leave behind these two sons of yours, that I may impart to them the knowledge by which God the Exalted will ennoble them. Then pay no regard to the informers, nor to the threat of the one informed to; for God the Exalted will crush the informers (7) and drive them to seek your intercession for them with the very one from whom you fled. Abu Ya'qub and Abu al-Hasan said: So the two of them did as he commanded, and departed, and left us there. And we would go back and forth
