Bihar al-Anwar al-Jami'a li-Durar Akhbar al-A'imma al-Athar — The Oceans of Light, gathering the pearls of the reports of the pure Imams.
فأرجو من فضله سبحانه على عبده الراجي رحمته و امتنانه أن يكون كتابي هذا إلى قيام قائم آل محمد عليهم الصلاة و السلام و التحية و الإكرام مرجعا للأفاضل الكرام و مصدرا لكل من طلب علوم الأئمة الأعلام و مرغما للملاحدة اللئام و أن يجعله لي في ظلمات القيامة ضياء و نورا و من مخاوف يوم الفزع الأكبر أمنا و سرورا و في مخازي يوم الحساب كرامة و حبورا ١و في الدنيا مدى الأعصار ذكرا موفورا فإنه المرجو لكل فضل و رحمة و ولي كل نعمة و صاحب كل حسنة و الحمد لله أولا و آخرا و صلى اللّٰه على محمد و أهل بيته الغر الميامين النجباء المكرمين و لنقدم قبل الشروع في الأبواب مقدمة لتمهيد ما اصطلحنا عليه في كتابنا هذا و بيان ما لا بد من معرفته في الاطلاع على فوائده و هي تشتمل على فصول.
I hope from His grace, glory be to Him, upon His servant who hopes for His mercy and His favour, that this book of mine may be, until the rising of the Qa'im of the family of Muhammad — upon them be blessings, peace, greeting and honour — a resource for the noble and eminent, a source for everyone who seeks the sciences of the illustrious Imams, and a humbling of the base heretics; and that He may make it for me, in the darknesses of the Resurrection, a radiance and a light; amid the terrors of the Day of the Greatest Alarm, a security and a joy; amid the disgraces of the Day of Reckoning, an honour and a gladness (1); and in this world, through the ages, an abundant remembrance. For He is the one hoped in for every grace and mercy, the patron of every blessing and the possessor of every good. Praise be to God, first and last, and may God bless Muhammad and the people of his house, the radiant, the blessed, the noble and honoured. And before beginning the chapters let us set down an introduction, to lay out the conventions we have adopted in this book of ours and to explain what must be known in order to come at its benefits; it comprises several sections.
