at the discussion of knowledge is better for you than the worship of a year whose day is fasted and whose night is stood in prayer; and the looking upon the face of the scholar is better for you than the freeing of a thousand necks.

«22»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: Luqman said to his son: O my son, sit with the scholars and press close to them with your knees; for God, mighty and majestic, revives hearts by the light of wisdom as He revives the earth by the heavy rain of heaven.

Elucidation: zahimhum — that is, crowd in upon them and enter into their throng; "with your two knees" — that is, put your knees into their throng. And al-wabil is rain of great drops and heavy.

«23»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: It is related from one of the Companions, who said: A man of the Helpers came to the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — and said: O Messenger of God, when a funeral and the gathering of a scholar are both present, which of the two is more beloved to you that I should attend? And the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: If the funeral has one to follow it and to bury it, then the attending of the gathering of a scholar is more excellent than the attending of a thousand funerals, and than the visiting of a thousand sick, and than the standing of a thousand nights, and than the fasting of a thousand days, and than a thousand dirhams given in charity to the poor, and than a thousand pilgrimages besides the obligatory one, and than a thousand campaigns besides the obligatory which you campaign in the way of God with your wealth and your self. And where do these attendances fall beside the attendance upon a scholar? Do you not know that God is obeyed by knowledge and worshipped by knowledge, and that the good of this world and of the hereafter is with knowledge, and the evil of this world and of the hereafter is with ignorance?

«24»- kshf, Kashf al-Ghumma: from the hafiz 'Abd al-'Aziz, from Dawud b. Sulayman, from al-Rida, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: The keeping company with the scholars is worship, and the looking upon 'Ali, peace be upon him, is worship, and the looking upon the House is worship, and the looking upon the codex is worship, and the looking upon the two parents is worship.

«25»- khts, al-Ikhtisas: al-Mufid, from Abu Ghalib al-Zurari and Ibn Qulawayh, from al-Kulayni, from al-Husayn b. al-Hasan, from Muhammad b. Zakariyya al-Ghallabi, from Ibn 'A'isha al-Nasri, raising it, that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said in one of his sermons: O people, know that he is not intelligent who is disturbed by false speech about him, nor is he wise who is pleased with the praise of the ignorant upon him. People are the sons of what they do well, and the worth of every man is what he does well. So speak in knowledge — your worths will be made plain.

«26»- khts, al-Ikhtisas: al-Baqir, peace be upon him, said: The recalling of knowledge for an hour is better than the standing of a night.
