«4»- ma, the Amali of al-Shaykh al-Tusi: Munif (1) related, from Ja'far b. Muhammad his master, from his father, from his grandfather, peace be upon him, who said: 'Ali, peace be upon him, said:

I bore patiently the bitterness of affairs, unwillingly — and I was certain, in that, of the right course in the matter —

When you do not know, and you have not been one to ask about knowledge him who knows — you are ignorant and do not know.

«5»- The Nawadir of al-Rawandi, by his chain, from Musa b. Ja'far, from his forefathers, peace be upon them, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: Question the scholars, and mix with the sages, and sit with the poor.

«6»- Munyat al-Murid: Zurara and Muhammad b. Muslim and Burayd al-'Ijli related, saying: Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, said: People perish only because they do not ask.

«7»- And from him, peace be upon him: Indeed this knowledge has a lock upon it, and its key is questioning.

Chapter 4: Discussing knowledge, keeping company with scholars, attending gatherings of learning, and the censure of mixing with the ignorant

«1»- li, the Amali of al-Saduq: Muhammad b. 'Ali, from 'Ali b. Muhammad b. Abi al-Qasim, from his father, from Muhammad b. Abi 'Umar al-'Adani, from Abu al-'Abbas b. Hamza, from Ahmad b. Sawwar, from 'Ubayd Allah b. 'Asim, from Salama b. Wardan, from Anas b. Malik, who said: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: The believer, when he dies and leaves behind a single sheet upon which is knowledge, that sheet will be on the Day of Resurrection a screen between him and the Fire; and God, blessed and exalted, gives him, for every letter written upon it, a city seven times wider than this world. And there is no believer who sits an hour with the scholar but that his Lord, mighty and majestic, calls to him: You have sat with My beloved; by My might and My majesty, I shall surely settle you in the Garden with him, and I shall not care.

Perhaps it is a corruption of Mu'attib — with damma on the mim, fatha on the undotted 'ayn, and doubling of the ta' with kasra — the client of Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, trustworthy. Al-Shaykh entered him in his Rijal once among the companions of al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, and said: of Medina, he transmitted with a chain from him, peace be upon him; and again among the companions of al-Kazim, peace be upon him, and said: trustworthy. And al-'Allama entered him in the first part of al-Khulasa and declared him trustworthy. And al-Kashshi related at p. 163, by his chain from Abu 'Abd Allah, peace be upon him, that he said: they are ten — meaning his clients — and the best of them and the most excellent of them is Mu'attib; and among them is a traitor, so beware of him; and he is young.
