«35»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: It was said to him, peace be upon him: Describe to us the man of intellect. He said: He is the one who puts each thing in its place. It was said to him: Then describe to us the ignorant. He said: I have done so.

The Sayyid, may God be pleased with him, said: He, peace be upon him, means that the ignorant is the one who does not put things in their places; so the leaving of his description was a description of him, since it was the opposite of the description of the man of intellect.

«36»- nhj, the Nahj al-Balagha: He, peace be upon him, said: There suffices you of your intellect what makes plain to you the way of your error (1) from your right direction.

«37»- And he, peace be upon him, said in his testament to al-Hasan, peace be upon him: And the intellect is the keeping of experiences; and the best of what you have experienced is what has admonished you.

«38»- Kanz al-Karajaki: The Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — said: The man of intellect is he who obeys God, even if he be of blameworthy aspect and slight account; and the ignorant is he who disobeys God, even if he be of comely aspect and great account. The most excellent of people is the most intelligent of people.

«39»- And it is related from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, that he said: The intellect is a birth, and knowledge is an acquisition, and sitting with the learned is an increase.

«40»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Whoever keeps company with an ignorant man diminishes from his intellect.

«41»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Firmness is the head of intellect, and sharpness is the head of folly.

«42»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The anger of the ignorant is in his speech, and the anger of the man of intellect is in his deed.

«43»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Intellects are gifts, and disciplines are acquisitions.

«44»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The corruption of characters is associating with fools, and the setting right of characters is associating with the people of intellect.

«45»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The man of intellect is he whom experiences have admonished.

«46»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Your messenger is the interpreter of your intellect.

«47»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Whoever leaves off listening to the possessors of intellects, his intellect dies.

«48»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Whoever keeps away from his caprice, his intellect is sound.

«49»- And he, peace be upon him, said: Whoever is pleased with his own opinion goes astray; and whoever deems himself sufficient by his intellect slips; and whoever is proud over people is abased.
