«17»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin; ghw, Ghawali al-La'ali: from the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — who said: The head of intellect, after faith, is affection towards people. And he — may God bless him and his family — said: The most intelligent of people is a doer of good who fears, and the most ignorant of them is an evildoer who feels secure.
«18»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: from the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — who said: The head of intellect, after faith in God, is the endearing of oneself to people.
«19»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: It is not for the man of intellect to be setting out save for three: the mending of a livelihood, or a favour in the hereafter, or a pleasure in what is not forbidden.
«20»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: It is related that the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — was asked: What is the intellect? He said: Acting in obedience to God; and those who act in obedience to God are the people of intellect.
«21»- And it is related that the Messenger of God — may God bless him and his family — passed by a madman and said: What is with him? It was said: He is mad. So he said: Rather he is afflicted. The madman is only he who prefers this world to the hereafter (1).
«22»- dh, Rawdat al-Wa'izin: It is related from the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, from the Prophet — may God bless him and his family — that he said: It behoves the man of intellect, when he is a man of intellect, to have four hours of the day: an hour in which he converses secretly with his Lord; an hour in which he calls himself to account; an hour in which he comes to the people of knowledge, who aid him in the affair of his religion and counsel him; and an hour in which he leaves his soul to its pleasure of the affair of this world, in what is lawful and praiseworthy.
«23»- khts, al-Ikhtisas: al-Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: The most excellent of the natures of the intellect is worship; and the most reliable of its discourse is knowledge; and the most abundant of its portions is wisdom; and the most excellent of its stores is good deeds.
«24»- And he, peace be upon him, said: The completeness of the intellect is in three: humility before God, goodness of certainty, and silence except from good.
«25»- And he said: Ignorance is in three: pride, intensity of wrangling, and ignorance of God. Those are the losers.
«26»- And he, peace be upon him, said: A man's intellect increases after forty, to fifty and sixty; then his intellect diminishes after that.
«27»- And he said: When you wish to test a man's intellect in a single sitting, speak to him in the course of your speech of what cannot be. If he denies it, he is a man of intellect; and if he holds it true, he is a fool.
