like the beasts. Al-Jazari said: al-khuwar is the sound of cattle; and from it is the tradition of the slaying of Ubayy b. Khalaf: "so he fell bellowing as the bull bellows" — end of quotation. The upshot is that his joy and his anxiety are outside the mean. His words "he falls upon the righteous" — that is, he finds fault with them and blames them. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and he ascribes to you" — perhaps it is with doubling, that is, he sets down, from al-tawqi', which is what is set down in books and decrees; or without doubling, with the ba' understood, that is, he faults you with what is not in you. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and he holds true God's promise and His threat" — that is, he believes in the two of them and acts by what they require. "And he fulfils the covenant" — that is, his covenants with God and with creation. His words — may God bless him and his family — "so he purifies his striving" — that is, from ostentation, from self-admiration and from the rest of what spoils the deed. His words — may God bless him and his family — "his heart is sound" — that is, from ostentation, from the kinds of associating partners, and from blameworthy characters; and his limbs from acts of disobedience and from what shows the absence of sincerity in him. His words — may God bless him and his family — "he has no mahmiya" — a verbal noun from al-himaya, that is, the protecting of the people of falsehood; and it is close to the sense of al-hamiyya, which is partisan zeal and disdain. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and nothing looms large" — that is, the goodness of his character and his patience makes the hardships of the world easy for him. His words — may God bless him and his family — "he contends with one above him" — such as his Maker, exalted be He, and His Prophet, and his Imam, and his teacher, and his parents, and everyone whose obedience is incumbent upon him. "And he undertakes" — that is, he ventures upon and turns to the acquiring of a matter he cannot reach. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and he beautifies his outward bearing" (1) — al-samt is the bearing of the people of good; that is, he adorns his outward and likens himself to the people of righteousness to the utmost of his effort and his striving. His words — may God bless him and his family — "his inward is corrupt" — that is, the hidden parts of his affairs and the inward of his states are corrupt and depraved. Al-Firuzabadi said: a man's dakhl, with fatha and with kasra, is his house, his way, all his affair, his skin and his inner lining — end of quotation. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and as for the mark of the envier" — it appears that one of the four has dropped out from the copyists, as the like of it occurred earlier (2); or in place of "four" it was "three", as in the testaments of Luqman, where he said: the envier has three marks — he backbites when absent, and fawns when present, and gloats at misfortune. His words — may God bless him and his family — "he is slack" — that is, he slackens and falls short and does not concern himself with it. His words — may God bless him and his family — "they have no portion" — al-khalaq, with fatha, is the share and the portion. His words — may God bless him and his family — "and it indeed gladdens" — perhaps what is meant is that his entering the Garden passes over to me, so that I too enter on his account; so it would be a verb. And it is possible that it is a verbal noun — that is, that this is a cause of ease and of the facilitating of my affairs in the hereafter
