As for what branches from self-guarding: soundness — the soundness of his soul and his going out from corruptions and faults. And humility before the Creator and before created beings, and not being too proud to accept the truth. And scrupulousness is the shunning of forbidden and doubtful things. And turning back is repentance and returning to God the Exalted. And understanding is the understanding of the goodness and badness of things, and the understanding of the faults of the soul and the greatness of its Creator. And discipline is goodness of conduct in the service of the Creator and in associating with creation. And beneficence to another, and the earning of people's love, and the choosing of good and of what is better in its outcome, and the shunning of evil.

As for what branches from modesty: gentleness of manner and the absence of harshness; and compassion and mercy towards creation. And watchfulness — and it is what is between two persons, each of whom watches and observes his companion — that is, he knows in all his states and remembers that God is aware of him, so he is ashamed to disobey Him or to leave His obedience and turn to another; and he awaits at every moment His mercy and guards against the descent of His retribution. And safety from the afflictions that come upon man in this world and the next through the leaving of modesty; and likewise the shunning of evil. And triumph, and it is the reaching of the desire and the sought object. And people's fair praise of him.

As for what branches from gravity (1): kindliness and beneficence to creation, or gentleness and forbearing courtesy with them; or the doing of things with delicacy of management and with what he knows, after reflection, to be the way of reaching it, without haste and hurry. And resolution is the securing of a matter and the taking hold of it with assurance, and reflection upon the outcomes of affairs. And the guarding of the private parts, that is, the keeping of them and the preventing of them from the forbidden and the doubtful; and whoever has no gravity follows the appetites, and they move him at the first of the matter, so he falls into the forbidden and the doubtful without deliberation. And the setting right of property likewise is made possible only by gravity, since haste in affairs and the following of everything that occurs at first glance mostly entails loss. And likewise preparedness against the enemy is only by deliberateness and firmness. And likewise the forbidding of the reprehensible, for that too proceeds only by management and resolution. And al-taharruj is the straitening of the matter upon the soul, or the doing of what entails sin. He said in al-Nihaya: and among them is the tradition of the orphans, taharraju that they should eat with them — that is, they straitened it upon themselves; and so-and-so taharraja when he did an act by which he falls into harij, from al-haraj, which is sin and straitness — end of quotation. And upon the second it would be conjoined to rashness. And certainty,
